Groupify privacy policy
This policy explains what the Groupify Chrome extension (“the extension”, “we”) does with your information. Groupify searches, groups and tidies the tabs in your browser, and it is built so that your tabs stay on your computer unless you turn on cloud AI.
Summary
- Your tabs are organized on your computer. Groupify reads the tabs open in your browser to show and group them. It doesn't send them anywhere.
- AI runs on your computer first. Names and task sorting use the AI model built into Chrome when it is installed.
- Cloud AI is optional and off by default. If you turn it on, only the titles and site names of the tabs being grouped are sent to Groupify's AI server, never full addresses. The server keeps nothing.
- No analytics, no tracking, no ads, nothing sold or shared.
Your tabs
To list, search and group your tabs, the extension reads the title, address and icon of the tabs open in the window you're using, and the names and colors of your tab groups. It reads them while the side panel is open and when it remembers a group you close (see What's stored). This information is used only on your computer.
Reclassify by purpose, by site or by last use, Close duplicates and search all work on your computer with no AI and no network connection.
On-device AI
When you group tabs without typing a name, or reclassify by task, the extension asks Chrome's built-in AI model (Gemini Nano) to suggest a name or sort the tabs, using the tab titles and site names. For Chinese, it may also use Chrome's built-in translator. Both run on your computer, and the text is not sent to us or to Google.
If Chrome has already downloaded the model, Groupify uses it. If Chrome supports it but hasn't downloaded it, Groupify asks Chrome to download it only when you click Download on-device AI in Settings; Chrome then downloads it from Google under Google's privacy policy. Otherwise groups are named after the date. You can turn on-device AI off in Settings.
Cloud AI (optional, off by default)
For computers without Chrome's built-in model, you can turn on Settings → Use Groupify's cloud AI. It is used only when the on-device model isn't available, and only when you group tabs without a name or reclassify by task.
What is sent
| Sent | Never sent |
|---|---|
For each tab being grouped (at most 40 per request): its title, shortened to 120 characters, and its
site name (for example vercel.com).The language you use Chrome in (English, Traditional or Simplified Chinese), so the name comes back in that language. |
Full addresses or paths, page content, cookies, passwords, your Google account, your other tabs, or any identifier for you or your browser. |
Where it goes and what happens to it
The request is sent over an encrypted connection to Groupify's AI server, which runs on Cloudflare Workers. The server passes the titles and site names to an open-source AI model hosted by Cloudflare Workers AI, gets back a name or a grouping, and returns it to the extension. On our server:
- The titles, site names and answers are never logged or stored.
- Your IP address is used only to limit how many requests one address can make per minute. We don't log or store it.
- Only requests from the Groupify extension are answered.
Cloudflare processes the request as our service provider to run the server and the AI model, and handles your IP address to carry the connection, under its own terms and privacy policy. The service is free and shared by everyone with a daily limit; when it's reached, or if anything goes wrong, the extension names groups after the date instead.
What's stored in your browser
The extension keeps the following in your browser's extension storage. None of it is sent to us.
| Data | Where | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Settings: default way to reclassify, AI and cloud AI switches, remembering closed groups | Chrome sync storage | If Chrome sync is on, Google syncs these between your own devices. |
| Names of groups you lock | Chrome sync storage | Used so Reclassify leaves those groups alone. |
| Groups you save: name, color and the addresses of their tabs | Chrome sync storage, or this device only if too large to sync | Kept until you delete them from Saved. |
| Recently closed groups: name, color and the addresses of their tabs | This device only | The last 20 groups you closed. Turn it off in Settings, or delete entries from Recently closed. |
| When each tab was opened, and a copy of your open groups | This device, session storage only | Used to sort tabs by task without AI and to remember closed groups. Cleared when you close the browser. |
What we don't do
- No analytics, telemetry, crash reporting or advertising, and no third-party scripts in the extension.
- No accounts, and no collection of names, email addresses, identifiers or browsing history.
- No selling, renting or sharing of user data, and no use of it for advertising, credit or lending decisions.
- No remotely hosted code: everything the extension runs ships inside the package reviewed by the Chrome Web Store.
Why the extension asks for each permission
| Permission | Used for |
|---|---|
tabs |
Reading the titles, addresses and icons of your open tabs to list, search, group and close them. |
tabGroups |
Creating, renaming, recoloring, collapsing and ungrouping tab groups. |
storage |
Saving your settings, locked groups, saved groups and recently closed groups in your browser. |
sidePanel |
Showing Groupify in Chrome's side panel. |
The cloud AI server is contacted without any extra permission: it only answers the extension's own requests.
Your choices
- Keep everything on your computer: leave Use Groupify's cloud AI off (the default).
- No AI at all: turn off Use on-device AI and leave cloud AI off in Settings; groups are then named after the date.
- Forget closed groups: turn off Remember closed groups, or delete entries one by one.
- Delete everything: removing the extension from Chrome deletes the data it stored in your browser.
Children
The extension isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone.
Chrome Web Store User Data Policy
The use of information received from your browser will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Data is used only to provide the features described above, and is not transferred to third parties except to Cloudflare, as described in this policy, when you turn on cloud AI.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top and describe significant changes in the release notes. The extension and its AI server are open source, so you can review exactly what they do on GitHub.
